Damage to the Ozone Layer

01/03/2020

How it Works?

The sun emits electromagnetic radiation at different wavelengths which is extremely dangerous. The ozone layer acts as a multilayer shield to protect against these harsh rays. The stratospheric layer of the ozone is the major protectant against the suns rays.

Ozone depletion is the gradual thinning of the ozone layer that occurs when chlorofluorocarbon gases (CFC) are released into the atmosphere. CFC gases stick to ice particles in the clouds, so when the ice melts, the gases are released. Once these CFC gases are released, they cause chemical reactions in the stratospheric layer of the atmosphere that break down the ozone layer and create holes. These holes in the stratospheric layer of the ozone reduce the ozone's UV radiation absorbing ability and cause more UV rays to hit the Earth's surface. CFC gases can remain in the atmosphere for decades and continuously break down and create more holes in the ozone layer.
